Frequently Asked Questions
What deductions come off an employee's gross salary?
Three statutory deductions apply: PAYE income tax (progressive bands from 0% to 37%), NAPSA pension at 5% of gross capped at K1,861.80, and NHIMA health insurance at 1% of gross with no cap.
What does the employer pay on top of the gross salary?
Employers match NAPSA at 5% (same ceiling of K1,861.80) and NHIMA at 1%. These are not deducted from the employee - they are additional costs borne by the employer.
What is "cost to company" and how is it calculated?
Cost to company is the total amount the employer spends per employee. It equals the gross salary plus employer NAPSA (5%) plus employer NHIMA (1%) - so roughly 6% more than the gross.
What is the current NAPSA contribution ceiling?
The monthly NAPSA ceiling is K1,861.80. Both the employee and employer contributions are capped at this amount, regardless of how high the gross salary is.
How are the PAYE tax bands applied?
PAYE uses progressive bands: the first K5,100 is tax-free, the next K2,000 is taxed at 20%, the next K2,100 at 30%, and everything above K9,200 at 37%. Each band only applies to income within that range.
